GameSpy post MK: SM Preview |
Gamespy
has a new preview of Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks. Their is
no new info on this preview, but they did say that it has
Excellently responsive control; solid fighting system,
Repetitive brawling action; and at times boring level
design.
::From the GameSpy Preview::
The control, which is the cornerstone of a brawler like
Shaolin Monks, is a large part of what elevates the game
from banal to intriguing. While nowhere near as robust and
accomplished as that game, a comparison to Ninja Gaiden is
warranted simply because taking characters from a fighting
game and throwing them into another genre is an idea that
works very well. The two characters in this game, Liu Kang
and Kung Lau, are built around an understanding of what
makes fighting game characters fun to control, and that's
what makes playing Shaolin Monks fun, too.

Monks.
::From the TeamXbox article::
We bring you the entire opening sequence of Mortal Kombat:
Shaolin Monks for the first time anywhere. The folks at
Midway have really outdone themselves with this one, as it
may be the best display of the MK fighters in action
anywhere. Seriously, this makes the movie and TV show look

Pro-G MK:SM Preview |
Pro-G
has just posted an article about Mortal Kombat: Shaolin
Monks. Theirs nothin really new about the game in this
article but it is a good preview for the game.
::From the Pro-G preview::
Also key to the new combat system are air combos, initiated
by the Launch button. This can be used at the end of a
series of attacks to launch enemies into the air and
continue the onslaught, or in a more supercharged version,
when used in conjunction with the R button, that launches
enemies higher, but also leaves the player open to attack in
the charging-up stage. At present the air combat is the
weakest of the fighting elements, with player-controlled
characters tracking air bound enemies poorly, making it hard
to connect with midair attacks.

Mortal Kombat : Shaolin Monks Diary #5 |
MortalKombatOnline.com has post the fifth online dairy
of the Developers of Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks. This
Diary insert is from Shaun Himmerick, the producer of MK:
Shaolin Monks.
::From the MKO Diary::
This game is MK, so of course there are Fatalities as you
may or may not know. But we have also made the ability to
upgrade the power to Multalities and finally to enter
Brutality mode.
A lot of the Fatalities have been shown around already in
bits and pieces, so you most likely know that we've done a
lot of Fatalities from MK2 but also brought in some new
ones. The best examples are things like Liu Kang's fatality
is directly from MK2, but in 3D and of course he has his
Dragon Fatality. Kung Lao, on the otherhand, has the hat
slice that i'm sure everyone has seen, but also has that
bunny fatality which is the reference to the Kung Lao
Friendship with the bunny, but then people also saw that
awesome new fatality from the Gamers' day trailer with Kung
Lao dragging his opponent over his spinning hat. That is one
of my new favorites. There are a good number of tribute
fatalities to old ones, but we've also created all-new
fatalities, as well. You know, it gets harder and harder to
come up with new fatalities, we've done so many over the
years.

Epic Battle Trading Card Game Info |
Score has answered a few question about
the Epic Battle trading for us. Their will be 234 cards in
the first edition set. 11 total characters from Street
Fighter and 11 total fighters from Mortal Kombat. Their
won't be any limited printed cards but they will have Ultra
Rare cards or Promo cards that you can only get if you go to
a tournament or they could be an insertion in a magazine.
They should be in your local Block Buster on September 15th.
1. How many cards are their in the first series? Do you have
a check list of them yet?
There are 234 cards in the first set. We will have a
checklist on our website that is going live soon; otherwise
I would have sent you a checklist.
2. How many Street Fight and how many Mortal Kombat
characters?
11 Street Fighter and 11 Mortal Kombat
3. Do you already have plans for any future series after
this one or do you want to see the response on the first
series?
We are already developing the 2nd set. This will release
in early 2006.
4. What are the different kinds of pack that you will sell?
Booster pack, starter packs
You can purchase 10 card blister packs or 52 card starter
decks.
Starter decks contain pre-selected cards based on whatever
character you pull. Starters have all of the basic cards to
start your collection and deck.
5. Will their be any special 1 of 10 type cards in the
packs?
There will not be limited print cards, but there are
ultra rares which are much rarer then other cards. There
will also be promo cards that can only be obtained through
attending local tournaments, conventions and through
magazine insertions.
6. Is their an exact date that we will see the cards in
Blockbuster?
Could it be earlier than September? San Diego Comic-Con
had some of the cards and packs at the show. Cards will
officially be in Blockbuster September 15th, product at
Comic-Con was mock-up product.
7. How much will the packs be?
Boosters are $3.99 per pack and starter decks are $12.99
each.

Detroit Free Press talks about Midway and
Mortal Kombat |
Detroit Free Press talks about Miway and
their fall line up. They have a little insert about Mortal
Kombat: Shaolin Monks.
::From the Detroit Free Press Article::
The most interesting title Midway has on tap for the
gift-giving season is "Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks," which
takes two of the characters from the best-selling series of
fighting games, Kung Lao and Liu Kang, and puts them in an
adventure game instead.
In addition to the pair's usual special moves -- including
the series' signature gruesome, fight-ending abilities --
you also get combo attacks and bonuses.

The Greatest Easter Eggs in Gaming |
Gamespot has an article about Easter Eggs in games.
Mortal Kombat and Reptile has made it in to this group of
games.
::From the Gamepot Article::
The Legend
It was so difficult to pull this Mortal Kombat trick off
that most players doubted it was even possible. But this was
no simple wives' tale. If you satisfied a very specific set
of requirements, you could face off against a green ninja at
the bottom of the game's Pit stage. To face Reptile, first
you had to be playing on one of the later revisions of the
game. Then you had to fight on the Pit stage on one of those
rare occasions when some shadowy item is flying in front of
the moon. This didn't happen all that often, but when it
did, you needed to beat your opponent without getting hit
and without touching the block button. Do all this and you'd
get to face Reptile. Reptile moved much faster than the
regular characters, and he had both Scorpion and Sub-Zero's
moves. If you could manage to defeat him, you could get
yourself 10,000,000 points. Lose and you might end up
getting Scorpion or Sub-Zero's fatality performed on you.
People went crazy trying to figure out a formula for making
the shadow appear in front of the moon, but it really just
might as well have been random. Later versions of the arcade
game had Reptile popping up before the start of random
matches, as well as giving off clues as to his whereabouts.

MKO Midway's Chicago 2005 Event Coverage |
Scott Howell and D'Arque Bishop of
MortalKombatOnline.com went to Midway's Chicago 2005
Event. They got tons of updates about Mortal Kombat: Shaolin
Monks. They also state that they got some info about MK7.
::From The MKO Report::
The latest Midway Games press event has come to a close.
Last night, we at Mortal Kombat Online spent an entire day
not only playing a near final complete version of Mortal
Kombat: Shaolin Monks, we were also able to also catch up
with past Mortal Kombat Development Team members Ed Boon,
Shaun Himmerick, John Podlasek, Mike Taran, Steve Beran,
Brian Lebaron, and Tony Goskie. We'll admit we're a little
exhausted after hours of intensive gameplay, watching Brice
Mellen (a blind MK fan from Nebraska) literally kick Ed
Boon's ass time and time again on Mortal Kombat: Deception,
and lastly having more drinks at the Sound Bar than you can
shake a fist at. But nevertheless, we're here to do some
reporting from the events that were last night.
Keep checking back this weekend as we will have our complete
impressions of Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks and gameplay
footage of all new levels, and you guessed it - we'll bring
you a small tease of what to expect from the much
anticipated Mortal Kombat 7. While most of what we learned
was told in confidence, we have a few small details that we
will unveil in our next update.

Gamespot Hands on Preview of MK:SM and
Developer Interview |
Gamespot got a Hands on pre-view at Midway's Press event
in Chicago yesterday. They also posted a new Developer
interview video.
::From the Gamespot Pre-view::
The best part about the game's state of completion was that
it was possible to finally get a feel for the puzzles and
hidden items that will be liberally strewn throughout the
game. While in Goro's Lair, flinging an opponent at a
chained skeleton on the wall yielded a secret. Later on, in
the stage based on the Pit from MK if you fired projectiles
at the moon you'd be rewarded with another secret. We also
noticed some nice bits in the area such as flinging a body
on the spikes coming from the ground and using it to make an
area to stand on and even using Ed Boon's head, seen in the
original arcade game, as a weapon. The Ko-op mode, two
player cooperative play, was feeling good with plenty of
unique options and combos during battle. The addition of
specific content for the mode and the gameplay tweaks
included to make the action run smoothly, such as keeping
the other player from falling too far behind, is a nice
touch that makes it worth clocking in a hefty amount of time
with the game.

Mortal Kombat : Shaolin Monks Diary #4 |
MortalKombatOnline.com has post the fourth online dairy
of the Developers of Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks. This
Diary insert is from Shaun Himmerick, the producer of MK:
Shaolin Monks.
::From the MKO Diary::
There are 8 characters in VS mode to make sure we did them
right. We had many choices where we had to decide to keep
something or cut it. Do you want 12 characters partially
cool or 8 fully tricked out? In the main game do you want 4
playable characters total that have upgrades and everything
or 7 and they all just have the basic moves and aren't
polished... ? This shit ain't easy people. We wanted a
better game, not a bigger one per say.
Yes Kung Lao's symbol is consistent from MK2.
Versus mode will NOT have A.I. Head-to-head versus people
only. We did not have time to do it, unfortunately. It would
have detracted from the main game. DO NOT call it lazy,
however... you wouldn't believe the hours people are working
to get the final details right. One of the Gameplay
programmers, Ben "Beer-Spiller" Kutcher worked so hard the
other day he started like mumbling around Midnight while
trying to talk, and he was making no sense. We sent him
home. I hate to single people out, all the programmers are
really working so hard, not just Beer-Spiller.

Producer of MK: SM |
Gamecloud has an interview with Shaun Himmerick of
Midway about Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks.
::From the Gamecloud Interview::
Gamecloud - What familiar Mortal Kombat characters will be
playable in Shaolin Monks?
Shaun Himmerick - Liu Kang and Kung Lao are the two
characters the story centers around. From there the player
will go though the realms and interact with a lot of
different MK characters. In the Wu Shi academy the player
works along side of Johnny Cage to defeat the enemies. Later
the player faces Baraka in a boss Battle. We have Many MK
characters from history in the game.
As the player progresses they can unlock 2 other playable
characters for the adventure game. One is Sub-Zero. The
other is a secret.
For Versus mode there will be 8 total characters available
for the players to use once they are unlocked.

to announce a new sound stage in New Orleans that will
quadruple production space there. A group backed by
Hollywood-based Sunset Gower Studios plans to build a $20
million film production complex in Algiers on the West Bank
of the Mississippi River, the online publication
Neworleansbiz.com reported Monday.
Meanwhile, Threshold Entertainment, which is planning to
film "Mortal Kombat III" in Louisiana, is interested in
building out 100,000-150,000 square feet of production space
that would double as a tourist attraction.

Mortal Kombat : Shaolin Monks Diary #3 |
MortalKombatOnline.com has post the third online dairy
of the Developers of Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks. This
Diary insert is from Shaun Himmerick, the producer of MK:
Shaolin Monks.
::From the MKO Diary::
As you already know, Midway LA (formerly, Paradox
Development), is developing the gam'about 10 people from the
MK team in Chicago helped to make MKSM come to life (and
probably close to 50 helped in some smaller way to get the
job done). For example, the Cinematic group in Chicago
consists of about 15 people and they made the opening movie
(that ROCKS). There are 8 total characters available in
Versus mode. I haven't seen any of these games referenced.
My life has been all about this game for 2 years, I lost my
girlfriend and I barely know who won survivor, thank God for
TiVo. The playable demo should be out soon for OPM and OXM
so be sure to check it out.
OK, the Cast of Characters.
A quick answer to a question related to this topic, for many
of the costumes we used MK2 throwback styles unless some
other idea was liked by the team better. The woman just
didn't look good as palette swaps. We tried to make it work,
but really they all looked to similar and not that appealing
that way. You might notice some of these attempts in the
concept art in the extra content.

ComputerandVideogames.com previews MK:
Shaolin Monks |
Computer and Videogames.com has posted a new hands on
preview of Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks.
::From the Computer and Videogames.com preview::
The game sees the razor-hatted Kung Lao join forces with
another MK favourite, Liu Kang, in what plays something like
Mortal Kombat meets Prince of Persia. Rather than a
straight-forward fighting sequel to Deception, Midway's
taken two of the franchise's biggest characters and plonked
them, along with the game's combat engine, into an splatter-tastic
action romp.
Basically, your goal is to travel from room to room,
decimating an endless stream of butt-ugly brutes in a bid to
reach a slightly bigger, uglier bad-ass boss at the end of
the level. Although the game does feature some lightweight
puzzle and exploration elements, the emphasis is definitely
on administering some brutal beatings and, unsurprisingly,
it's the combat element that producer Shaun Himmerick is
most keen to show off.

BonusStage.com Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks
Preview |
BonusStage.com posted a new preview of Mortal Kombat:
Shaolin Monks. It sound like it is a preview of the OXM and
OPM demo that is coming out August 9th.
::From the BonusStage Preview::
When they’re not dodging falling pieces of ceiling, players
can also pick up and throw selected objects such as skulls
or bones lying on the ground, which can temporarily stun an
enemy out of striking distance. Once past the first few
brutes and in another room, specials and aerial moves get a
quick lesson. Using both of these in tandem with standard
and enhanced attacks allow for some amazingly long combo
strings and juggles against single or multiple enemies.
Shaolin Monks‘ smooth controls allow for equally fast combat
against groups with both playable characters having no less
than 10 Fatalities and 4 different attack styles. Even
friendless gamers out there will definitely want to go
through the single player mode a few times just to
experiment with the different fighting styles. Dishing out a
60+ hit combo against three enemies and then finishing off
two with Kung Lao’s hat throw or a fireball from Liu Kang is
awesome stuff, to say the least.
